Chemistry of acetylene on platinum (111) and (100) surfaces.

An ultra-high vacuum experimental study of acetylene chemisorption on Pt(111) and Pt(100) and of the reaction of hydrogen with the acetylene adsorbate has established distinguishing features of carbon-hydrogen bond breaking and making processes as a function of pressure, temperature, and surface crystallography. The rates for both processes are substantially higher on the Pt(100) surface. Net a...

Azidation of silicon(111) surfaces.

A two-step chlorination/azidation process was reported to prepare azide-modified silicon(111) surfaces. XPS and IR analyses show the covalent bonding of azide with silicon. In combination with scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy analyses, different kinetic rates, azide coverages, and surface-area distributions were derived depending on the azidation solvent.

Chlorination of hydrogen-terminated silicon „111... surfaces

Infrared absorption spectroscopy was used to investigate the chlorination of hydrogen-terminated Si 111 surfaces by three different methods: a exposure to a saturated solution of phosphorus pentachloride PCl5 in chlorobenzene; b exposure to chlorine gas, Cl2 g , and c exposure to Cl2 g under UV illumination. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and first principles model clusters calculations were ...

Instabilities of Vicinal Silicon ( 111 ) Surfaces

The morphological instabilities of vicinal Si(111) due to a DC electric current and due to the 7 x 7 reconstruction are studied using a variety of diffraction and imaging techniques. The current induced instabilities which occur at sublimation temperatures or under conditions of step-flow produce morphological features on length scales appropriate for optical studies, 5 50,u. Optical microscopy...
